Water & Energy

Working with water and energy companies to manage demand and promote sustainable behaviours while improving customer experience and engagement.

Our work in this space

We collaborate with a wide range of utility providers and policymakers across the UK, the USA, Europe and the Middle East, applying behavioural science to help manage demand for water and energy by reducing and shifting demand to off-peak times.

We employ behavioural science to promote adoption of green technologies and strategies such as lawn replacements, smart metres, and consumption audits as a means of managing residential and commercial resource use. We also work with utility providers to engage their customers to get the most out of green technologies.

Our recent work in energy has focused on increasing public acceptance of new infrastructure (e.g. assessing public appetite for Carbon Capture and Storage in Qatar). With the International Energy Agency (IEA), we have worked on increasing consumer acceptance of smart energy tariffs and technologies that help balance the electrical grid such as smart thermostats and tariffs linked to electric vehicles. Also with the IEA, we have experience developing and validating new smart tariffs and services for small and medium businesses (SMEs) in line with behavioural principles.

We also have experience working with policymakers and energy companies to design and test programmes and tools to reach and assist low-income households.
