Consumer Protection

Using behavioural science to accelerate the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable economy by helping cut carbon emissions, reduce resource usage, and better manage waste.

Our work in this space

From water and energy resource conservation to carbon emissions reduction to waste management and recycling, sustainability is at the heart of our work, cutting across many of the sectors we work in.

Alongside the International Energy Agency (IEA) we developed an online toolkit to help policymakers better understand the behavioural assumptions underlying different demand-side energy policy instruments and improve the effectiveness of their policies. We also work with water and energy utility companies and local governments to help design and test communications and tools that encourage people and businesses to reduce water and energy consumption.

With large employers such as airlines, construction companies, pharmacy and grocery chains we have designed and tested interventions to change the behaviour of employees resulting in carbon emission reductions and savings for the companies.  We also work with transport authorities and sports organisations to change the travel behaviour of commuters and fans shifting away from automobile use to public transport and active travel.

We use behavioural science to encourage recycling and waste management through educational tools such as the waste game, developed in partnership with the Irish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). We have also designed and tested communications and incentive schemes to reduce consumption of single-use coffee cups among university students across Ireland and of single-use razors among Gillette customers.
