This essay analyses the status quo of academic and policy thinking regarding new approaches to environmental regulation. In particular, the objectives of environmental policy and by which criteria it may be assessed, avenues for further policy design research and the choice of policy instruments are investigated with a view to further environmental policy and economics research.
