A New Approach to an Age-Old Problem: Solving Externalities by Incenting Workers Directly

The authors investigate the impact of information and incentives on Virgin Atlantic Airways captain’s performance. Estimates of fuel saving range from 266,000 to 704,000kg of fuel over 8 months as a result of the treatments. It is therefore argued that targeting workers directly is an efficient method for improving effectiveness.
