Neighbors, Knowledge, and Nuggets: Two Natural Field Experiments on the Role of Incentives on Energy Conservation
Paul Dolan, Robert D Metcalfe
Two natural field experiments form the basis of this paper. Results suggest that offline (but not online) social norms messages reduce energy consumption by about 6%. Large financial incentives were successful in reducing energy consumption online but not when combined with social norms; this highlights the need to test interventions before they are rolled out at scale.
